Coburn Place Safe Haven provides women who have suffered from domestic violence and their children a chance to start anew, to finally accomplish a dream that an abusive partner and circumstances prevented. We provide safe, affordable housing with fully furnished apartments. We provide the encouragement and supportive services necessary for self-sufficiency. And we provide time, six months up to two years, to begin healing and move toward a life of independent living. Safe, Affordable Housing One of the major barriers to self-sufficiency is establishing safe housing. The greatest need of all Coburn Place participants is safe and affordable housing. All Coburn Place residents live in individual, fully-furnished apartment homes. Each apartment includes a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom(s) and living spaces designed for privacy and to promote independent living. Gas, electricity and water are included. The building and grounds are fenced in with access granted by a staff member 24/7. During the first six months or CORE Phase, we provide all residents with access to Care, Opportunities, Resources and Empowerment services. Coburn Place does not charge rent during the CORE phase. As residents move into the Self-Sufficiency Phase (months 7-24), we help prepare them for the responsibilities that come with independent living. Rent is assessed at an amount that never exceeds 30% of a resident's income. Any money that is paid for housing costs (minus any damage or assessed fees) is returned to the resident upon exit from the program. This nest egg provides great assistance as they move into permanent housing. Supportive Services Access to supportive services is a barrier to living a healthy, independent life for many homeless women surviving domestic violence. We provide access to services, both on-site and off-site. Our staff, contracted employees and partner agencies work together to provide a complete set of services designed to help move our women and children toward a life of self-sufficiency. Each resident at Coburn Place is on an individual journey to healing and independence. For some of our women, just having someone to listen to them can make a world of difference. Our advocates become their partners. Together they develop a plan that is right for her. She sets short- and long-term goals, establishes a plan of action and chooses the supportive services that are right for her and her family. We feel this voluntary services model coupled with a œhousing plus approach to ending homelessness and the cycle of violence, is the most effective way to help our women help themselves. Supportive services available to all Coburn Place women and children include: - Confidential Adult and Child Advocacy - Safety Planning - Short- and Long-Term Goal Planning - Employment Training and Financial Coaching - Basic Needs Assistance - Supportive Assistance - Permanent Housing Referrals - Individual and Family Therapy - Domestic Violence Support Groups - Parenting and Family Support - After-School Care for Children - Age-Appropriate Children's Services and Program
